Focus on Greenspan

The making and inner workings of Fed chairman Alan Greenspan
2/12/2001
This is an interesting time for these books, Greenspan: The Man Behind Money (Martin) and Maestro: Greenspan's Fed and the American Boom (Woodward), to appear, just as the glories of the Greenspan era are being called into question. Through meeting transcripts and largely anonymous interviews, Woodward delves behind the scenes of strategic plays by the powerful chairman. Martin's book is essentially a biography that takes Greenspan from childhood to political prominence, revealing such interesting details as his talent as a jazz clarinetist and long bond with libertarian novelist Ayn Rand. Neither book offers a clear, unbiased view of Greenspan's economics, but both provide insight into his elusive character and highly praised tenure as chairman of the Federal Reserve.
