The Asian economic crisis: wake-up call, not collapse
3/26/2001
Remade in America is Jim Rohwer's second optimistic book on the Asian economy. Such optimism might be called into question since his previous book, Asia Rising, was written just prior to the Asian economic collapse of 1997. However, Rohwer still insists that the many aspects of the Asian economy poised for success will counter the staying power of the recent crisis. He argues that the crisis will actually boost the economy in the long run, since it cleaned up corrupt and ineffective financial systems and led Asians to begin integrating successful management and finance trends coming out of America. Along with extensive statistical analysis, Rohwer draws on nearly 10 years of experience as a journalist, consultant, and economist in Hong Kong. The book includes numerous interviews with leaders from countries all around Asia as well as GE CEO Jack Welch.
