Usability, information architecture, or user experience mandates are usually left to technology or design teams. In Built for Use, Karen Donoghue assesses the online experience from a new perspectivethat of the business strategist. She lays the groundwork for managers to understand and participate in planning and strategy for their company's online presence. While best and worst practices are offered, the overall message is this: Your company's online experience is not going to be a success just because you have the best designers or followed the best heuristics checklist. The strength of a company's Web product comes from an interdisciplinary team, and needs to reflect the values of the company. Donoghue's book provides managers with the tools to understand user experience and to help their companies develop consistent, interesting, and ultimately useful products.
