Putting EI theory into practice
9/25/2000
Working to put theory into practice, The Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations promotes the ideas described in Daniel Goleman's pioneering books Emotional Intelligence and Working with Emotional Intelligence. Established in 1996 with the support of the Fetzer Institute, the Consortium's original charge was "to study all that is known about emotional intelligence in the workplace." Substantive examples of their research are available on the Web site. The model programs project, for example (designed to identify a body of best practices), includes 15 examples of organizations that use at least one of the five dimensions (self-monitoring, self-regulation, self-motivation, empathy, and social skills) characterized by Goleman in his work. The site provides practical guidelines to assist organizations in the successful implementation of EI concepts, and much more. This is a reliable and practical resource for managers wishing to incorporate emotional intelligence concepts into their organization's framework.
