It's one of the less understood downsides to downsizing. When you have to let employees go, they take more than their last paycheck with them. The authors call it "chronic knowledge loss," the loss of institutional smarts that ultimately results in lower productivity and profit loss. The answer, outlined in the book, proposes a process for departing employees to transfer their know-how and institutional knowledge to their successors. Long-term benefits of this program can include faster ramp-up of new employees, better customer satisfaction, and increased productivity.
