Can we reduce energy consumption without reducing commerce?
2/23/2004
The author, a professor of geography at the University of Manitoba in Canada, reminds us that all commerce is dependent upon energy. However, the world's increasing consumption of energy cannot be accommodated at the same rate as during the last part of the 20th century. Having already authored several books on energy, Smil takes his most interdisciplinary approach with this new volume. His conclusion includes a discussion of how a "no-regret strategy" to reducing our need on fossil fuels is required to moderate our energy needs. Consumption solutions that will produce the greatest impact ideally will include a combination of technical advances, better pricing, and management and social changes.
