Globalizing LA: Trade, Infrastructure, and Regional Development

Los Angeles: The hub of globalization?
    4/19/2004
Written by a political science professor who is also the director of the Urban Studies and Planning Program at the University of California, this book reflects upon the rise of Los Angeles as a major hub of the global economy. Looking at LA's business climate from the 1880s onward, Erie highlights the trade, infrastructure, and regional developments that brought LA out of the shadow of San Diego and into the light of globalization to become one of the world's top ten busiest container ports and passenger and cargo airports in 2001. In his chronicles, Erie weaves in analysis of politics and local government. And what does the future hold? Although LA has a strong global presence now, it is unclear if the city is positioned to meet the infrastructure and security challenges of coming years.—Cynthia D. Churchwell
