Landing on the Right Side of Your Ass: A Survival Guide for the Recently Unemployed

What it takes to get over being dumped.
    3/8/2004
This is not your average self-help guide for the jobless. HBS alum and layoff survivor Michael Laskoff has written a no-frills book that offers practical tips for those who find themselves out of a job and with nowhere to go. The book aims to help the unemployed worker deal with the grief that follows a loss and, through a series of exercises, demonstrates how easy it is to land a better opportunity. Laskoff is painfully honest in his approach—several of his examples are mistakes he made that either cost him a job or prevented him from moving on. After wrestling with the job loss demons, one might act on some of Laskoff's advice: Know yourself and what you want out of your next job; network, network, network; and negotiate effectively to maximize compensation.—Sara Grant
