Fixing what will soon be ailing manufacturing.
3/11/2002
Author Schonberger, who coined the term "world-class manufacturing," sees a crisis looming, namely that our industrial competitiveness is about to be blunted by complacency even as the marketplace becomes fiercer. Sure, we all talk about continuous improvement in manufacturing, but we do a lousy job implementing it, he says. So, "Let's Fix It" by using performance measurement to focus on form and structure, and improve the manufacturing process via real continuous improvement. Schonberger's focus on using research (gasp!) and measurable results to stay lean is a nice antidote to more trendy touchy-feely books targeted at the same audience: executives, team leaders, investors, business educators, and students.
