Looking at laborers in industrial America.
6/16/2003
These 155 great photographs of laborers in jobs we no longer see in America seem both a testament to how far we've come and to how much we've lost. The images come largely from marketing materials and other works produced by long-lost companies including E.A. Whitney Carriage Co., Carnegie Steel Company, and Union Stockyards and Transit Co. Few of us want to see a return to the back-breaking, unsanitary workplaces depicted here, but we also miss the times when a craftsman painted a baby carriage by hand.
