Management and leadership skills in nonprofitsthere is a difference.

What's it like to manage employees in a nonprofit or public service organization? Are there significant differences in leadership skills and strategies? First of all, it takes a different perspective and mindset, say the authors. Standard organizational behavior theory focuses on the individual, group processes, and organizational influences. Public service OB adds a fourth item to the mix: governance in the public interest. Thus, OB HR "encompasses both the values inherent in a 'people' perspective on organizations and the values that guide public service in democratic government." The authors support this premise through case studies, exercises, and examples of problem solving involving nonprofits and public service organizations. Although this volume is a textbook meant for graduate level MPA (Master in Public Administration) students, it is also a valuable reference for practitioners in the field.
