Representatives from industry, government and academia launched the Next-Generation Manufacturing (NGM) Project in 1995 to help U.S. manufacturers "chart a course for success in an increasingly complex and competitive global business." Jordan and Michel, participants in the project and now consultants to the manufacturing industry, have brought together the project's ideas for achieving success through an understanding of the roles of innovation, knowledge and people in competitive readiness. They frame their presentation around the story of a fictional manufacturing CEO, but also provide real company examples, as well as exercises and methodologies. (The official 1997 report of the NGM projectat 705 pages nearly twice the length of this bookis available online.)
