Behind the scenes as Carly Fiorina remakes a tech giant.
2/24/2003
Few female CEOs have captured the headlines over the last few years like Carly Fiorina, who took over Hewlett-Packard in 1999. But then again, few CEOs, whatever their gender, have waged as many high-profile battles as she. Her arrival at HP from Lucent was a clash of East Coast versus West Coast, female versus male, change versus tradition, and a dozen other battles that Fiorina usually won. But her years at HP will ultimately be defined by her fight to acquire Compaq, a battle that pits her against the family of company co-founder William Hewlett. Anders, a Pulitzer Prize winner for business reporting, takes us behind the scenes of the Compaq deal, which Anders seems optimistic will help HP regain its past glory. That remains to be seen. But for high-stakes action, you can't beat reading through the pages of Perfect Enough.
