Financial performance measurement through Economic Value Added (EVA)
2/15/2000
Economic Value Added, or EVA, is a measure of financial performance an
alternative to the more traditional earnings per share that has been
adapted by a growing number of firms in recent years as a truer way of measuring
value for shareholders. Financial consultants Stern Stewart & Co.
coined the term and have even trademarked it, and they present a dynamic
explanation of their approach on the company Web site. Newcomers to EVA
will want to visit "About EVA," as well as the company case histories
under "EVA in Action." You can also preview the interactive
multimedia "EVA Training Tutor." (Access to the full tutorial, online
or on CD-ROM, is available for a fee.) Stern Stewart is not the only
purveyor of this kind of approach (though, as Fortune magazine notes,
their trademarked EVA has become, like Kleenex, shorthand for others of its
type). But they are the most prominent, and they've made good use of the
Web in conveying what it's all about.
