A virtual exhibition of American revenue policy and politics
10/16/2000
"The earliest accounts of American taxation cannot be separated from the politics of colonial commerce," begins the first part of this virtual exhibition of American revenue policy and politics. And, indeed, commerce and taxation remain intertwined throughout U.S. history and throughout the galleries of this online-only "museum." Produced by Tax Analysts, a nonprofit tax information organization, it includes detailed and well-illustrated narratives of American tax history from 1660 through the end of the 19th century, with good external links as well. (The 20th century segment, still in the works, looks promising: a preview includes early sound clips of Woodrow Wilson's treasury secretary and others discussing tax reform and policy, plus photos, posters, and political cartoons.) It's an interesting and entertaining effort, and well worth a visit now and as more is added in the future.
