A holistic view of an increasingly fragmented discipline
1/8/2001
This handbook represents a valuable contribution to the field of organizational studies. Locke, a professor at the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, has brought together an integrated collection of articles on principles of organizational behavior (OB) in 29 topical areas. Each chapter is written by an academic expert in the field and represents the latest research and thinking on the topic. But Locke was also insistent that the writing not be too academic in tone so that it would be accessible to working managers. He has also kept the chapters to a consistent format, including identification of the principle(s), justification for them, specification of implementation and/or contingency factors, and illustrations of principles through positive and negative case examples. It's an excellent effort offering a holistic view of an increasingly fragmented discipline.
