Defining success in the New Economy
4/30/2001
The emerging economy offers unprecedented opportunities and great jobsbut not without a price, says political economist Robert Reich. In The Future of Success, Reich presents a grounded analysis of how the New Economy affects our work and personal lives. He doesn't have to search far for an example: Reich describes his own decision to resign from his Cabinet post, a job he "couldn't get enough of," because of the toll on his family life. Logically structured around the new work, which focuses on how technology is "changing the way work is organized and rewarded", and the new life, which examines the implications of the new work on personal, family, and community involvement, the book concludes with a discussion of the personal and social choices arising from these new constructs. Reich challenges readers to reconsider the meaning of success in a world marked by increasing opportunities and choices.
