A one-stop guidebook to the world of mergers and acquisitions, this hefty volume is not cheap: The list price is $125. The M&A Deskbook nonetheless makes a smart investment for any corporate library. Written by a merger consultant who's advised such clients as Allied Chemical and Schering Plough, the book provides basic definitions of terms spanning activity-based costing through "zombie" (slang for "an insolvent or bankrupt company that continues to operate, usually with the help of an intervening regulatory or support organization"). There's also an in-depth section of helpful material outlining SEC and Federal Reserve rules and regulations, as well as summaries of landmark legal cases, and much more.
