Unwanted Company: Foreign Investment in American Industries

Industry reactions to foreign-owned firms in the U.S.
    1/26/2004
Written by an assistant professor of political science at Fordham University, this volume analyzes domestic reactions to foreign investment in America. The reactions varied over time and by industry. Industry analysis "explores the effect that the globalization of production had" and helps explain responses regarding policies on the matter. Domestic industry participants opposed trade regulations that allowed foreign firms an unfair competitive advantage. However, these same participants sometimes wanted protection for their own investment activities for fear of retaliation. It appears that there is a correlation between the level of globalization of the industry and that industry's reaction to foreign direct investment, with more globalized industries such as telecommunications being more in favor of restricting FDI.
