Work in the New Economy: Flexible Labor Markets in Silicon Valley

Is Silicon Valley the template for how work gets done this century?
    10/28/2002
The transformation of the old economy to the information economy impacts society in a variety of fundamental ways. Work in the New Economy examines the effects of these structural changes on the workforce though a careful analysis of labor markets in Silicon Valley. As the heartland of information technology industries, Silicon Valley highlights significant patterns of work that will likely be diffused into other industries and geographic markets this century. The author focuses on three distinctive features of work practices and the employment relationship in Silicon Valley: labor market flexibility, the role of labor market intermediaries, and the effects of these factors on workers' careers. This book is relevant for a wide audience, as all of us try to make sense of the new work environment.
